At Books in Balance, we believe that the best life is one with a balance between responsibility and recreation.
As a business owner, finding this balance is often like searching for a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
Our dream is to partner with business owners and directors to help make managing finances more efficient giving them back time to spend doing what they love with the people they love.

… and someone told me that, as an accountant, you can work from home, I was hooked. I set off for college to get an accounting degree, but my path was not a straight line.
By the end of my first year, I had married my high school sweetheart and shortly after that, our first baby was on the way. That fall we were relocated by my sailor husband’s change in duty stations and my education was put on hold. I focused on taking care of my husband, our household, and eventually our son.
A few years and a few moves later, our son was ready for preschool and I was ready to get back to class. I scheduled my classes to coincide with his and we pressed on. Finances were tight and my natural tendencies came in handy. By the time he had finished first grade, I had both an Associate of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Science degree to my name. Time to go to work!
After graduating in December, I accepted a position as a Cost Accountant for a local forklift manufacturer.
After one day of training by my predecessor and a few months on the job, I was turning in my monthly reports within the first week of the next month and taking on any additional tasks anyone would throw my way. After 6 months, they called me in and told me that when I hadn’t taken any notes that first day, they didn’t think I’d last. They had been pleasantly surprised by me and gave me raise! I was on my way, right?
Not so fast!

… there’s more! This was just a couple months before my husband was due to get out of the Navy and he was not finding suitable opportunities locally so, once again, we moved. I spent that fall getting us all settled into our new area, new school, and new routines. As I started looking for a new job, both my husband and son had expressed that they did not enjoy having me working full time, so I decided it was time to take advantage of the flexibility available in the accounting field. After all, that was what had solidified my career decision in the first place.
I ended up in a small CPA office where I could put my son on the school bus in the morning before heading to work and follow the school bus home every afternoon. If my son was sick or had a day off from school, I was able to stay home with him. In the summertime, I would bring him to the office and a co-worker’s high school aged kids would pick him up and keep him for the day. This was the life I had envisioned! Almost.
During this time, I decided to use my skills to give back to the community as my mom had taught us to do. I became the treasurer for the Cub Scouts and the local PTO while also taking my CPA exam with my hand over my mouth, literally, so I wouldn’t throw up on the test. Our second son was born the next Spring.
Once again, I was at home spending my spare time using our household finances to create spreadsheets for budgets and asset tracking and cash flow forecasts. Oh, my! I was applying for bookkeeping jobs and asking if they would let me work from home, but, as much as they all wanted to hire me, the positions always needed to be on site.
… who had started his own consulting company out of his spare bedroom and had just gotten a big engineering project. He needed help with the books including… cost accounting. I ended up working with his company, which was eventually 3 companies with almost 100 employees in 13 states, as the Manager of Accounting and Finance for 12 years. I rarely worked more than 30 hours in a week and was able to work from home when I needed to or to take my son and go in on a Saturday when that worked best for our schedule.
When he sold the company was when I really started thinking about offering my services as a consultant in some way. I just wasn’t sure how to go about it. I ended up accepting a part time position with another small company offering financial tracking and reporting mainly to high-tech start-ups similar to the one I had been with. I had also started consulting for another small service based business on the side that is still with me more than 7 years later even after…another move.
This latest move coincided with moving our younger son to college. Now what do I do? I finally start out on my own to find business owners to work with that also have a strong desire for the work/life balance that I hold so dear for myself. I’ve always kept busy, but I am a firm believer in living the life that you have and making the most of every moment.
